What Is A Hybrid System

Hybrids have been around for a long time. That being said, most people don't fully understand how they work. When you cut through all of the mystery is comes down to simply this, a hybrid system uses two power sources to work. Think of it like it is a person, who needs food and water to work.

The Three Major Types Of Hybrids

1. Full Hybrids- this option gives you the best in mile per gallon. By using all of the technology available in this system. A great example of this type of hybrid is the Toyota Prius. The Prius is the father of the modern hybrid. One of the first hybrids systems on the market it sets the standard in this category of vehicle. There are several options in this option, like the Honda Insight, Ford C-max, and the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid. All are great options with their own options and features.
2.Mild Hybrid- This option gives doesn't give you the best in miles per gallon but is better then a traditional gas only car. The way it works is that it has a 2nd power source that assist the gas power source. The electric source never takes over completely. A great example of this type of hybrid id the General Motors eAssist system.
3.Plug-In Hybrid- this is the newest category in the hybrid market.Right now in the united states there are 7 models on the market right now. This is just the next step to bridge the gap between hybrid and electric cars. The system uses everything in the full hybrid system but has a trick up its sleeve. It has a larger battery source that holds a longer charger. This lets them work like a electric car for a limited amount of time. A great example of this the Chevy Volt. With a class leading all electric mode range of 38 miles.

Hybrid Sub-Categories

The sub-categories are here to give you the fell of driving something else. In the last few years this group has made huge advances.
The Micro hybrid is one of the sub-categories. Some do not consider this a Hybrid system. It has a small 48-volt battery to operate on-board systems, and may improve economy 10-20 percent. A great example of this is the Mazda's i-ELOOP system.
The next sub-category is the "muscle" hybrid. This concept is to add hybrid technology to gain performance. Like a bolt on supercharger or turbo. You do gain some fuel economy but this category is more about going faster. A great example of this category is the BMW ActiveHybrid 3 and the Infiniti Q50.
